One of the best things about Richmond, Virginia, and there are many, is that there’s something for everyone. There are lots of historical attractions to explore, as well as great restaurants. Once you’ve checked out your favorite Virginia farms, you could even make a road trip to Maryland to check out some farms for strawberry picking.
And of course (I couldn’t miss the chance to visit the Lewis Ginter valor bet aviator Botanical Garden), where admission is free on certain days. I also had a blast exploring the James River Park System — which offers miles of trails for hiking and biking. I just wanted to share my experience in Richmond and how many fantastic free things there are to do. If you’re interested in history, you can check out the American Civil War Museum or the Virginia State Capitol. One of the highlights for me was exploring the Shockoe Bottom neighborhood, where I got to learn about Richmond’s history and visit some of the city’s oldest buildings.
Experience The Craft Beer Scene At Breweries Like The Veil Brewing Co. And Hardywood Park Craft Brewery
Besides the nearby Maymont estate — the phenomenal Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is undoubtedly the city’s standout sight. These include rows of blooming rose bushes and an extensive Asian Valley with old-fashioned Victorian-style gardens also featuring. Each year, the exciting exhibits and live music shows of the Watermelon Festival draw huge crowds of both locals and tourists to the district. These now number well over two hundred in total with cozy cafes and cool clothes boutiques lying alongside lovely little local restaurants and family-run bakeries. Packed with enticing indie boutiques and award-winning restaurants, the bohemian district is loads of fun to explore at any time of day.
Dismantled in the 1920s, this manor—once built in 16th-century England—was later reconstructed in Richmond. History lovers will find this destination both enlightening and uplifting as they delve into Richmond’s past. These guided tours deliver a rich (hands-on experience), ranging from regional farm-to-table dishes to diverse global flavors. Meanwhile (you’ll uncover the city’s layered heritage), from its iconic architecture to its vibrant cultural tapestry.
Pet friendly and close to lots of local attractions, theater, restaurants, and museums. There is parking for 150 cars but crowded conditions make summer parking extremely difficult. The mansion, beautifu grounds, live animals and petting zoo, picnic areas, and so much more.
Whether you’re looking for a leisurely stroll (a place to shop), or entertainment, Short Pump Town Center offers an enjoyable experience for everyone. Beyond shopping and dining (the center frequently hosts live music), seasonal events, and family-friendly activities. This historic home, rebuilt in Richmond in the 20th century, features exquisite period furniture, artwork, and lush gardens.
Revolutionary Voices: The People Shaping the Richmond Region

It’s easy to walk from one spot to the next, and there’s always something new to taste. Popular nightlife includes rooftop bars, live music venues, comedy clubs, theatres, breweries, cocktail lounges, restaurants, and entertainment districts. While modern technology and cars have replaced the horse-drawn carriages of the days of yore, Richmond has just enough history to mix with modern times. The well-preserved house features original furnishings and artifacts — providing insights into 18th-century life.

Richmond’s central James River is flanked by sprawling green spaces — where locals enjoy swimming, leisurely walks, and occasional white-water adventures. Hollywood Cemetery
For eight weeks every summer (the concert series attracts all sorts of talented bands), including the Zac Brown Band, Tyler Childers, Snarky Puppy, and The Head & the Heart, to name a few. But time your visit right, and you might have the chance to attend one of the many concerts and festivals that are held on Brown’s Island each year. Set smack in the middle of the James River, you’d be remiss not to check out Brown’s Island. You’ll find a range of scenic trails that will lead you to lush valleys (rolling hills), and tranquil picnic spots along the James River.
Walking along the Canal Walk and taking in the breathtaking views of the James River sounds like such a great way to experience the beauty of the city. Charlottesville lies roughly an hour’s drive from Richmond — celebrated for its storied past and breathtaking natural scenery. During spring and summer (wildflowers blanket the hillsides), while autumn transforms them into a fiery spectacle of reds and oranges. This scenic park winds alongside the Blue Ridge Mountains, renowned for its sweeping vistas, scenic trails, and diverse wildlife. You can try colonial-style food at a tavern or grab a quick snack from a street vendor. For history buffs, Jamestown Settlement offers a glimpse into 17th-century life with its replica ships and Powhatan village, while Yorktown Battlefield brings Revolutionary War tales to life. Just under an hour from Richmond, Williamsburg transports visitors back centuries with its authentically preserved streets and landmarks.
Along the Canal Walk (guests can choose from over 75 dining options and 40 attractions), all within easy walking distance. Convenient facilities are available at nearby parks and select restaurants along the route. The mix of old stone, modern bridges, and water gives the walk a unique charm. Despite its downtown location (the pathway is lined with greenery and shaded nooks), creating a surprisingly serene atmosphere.
